Yale Standards for Using AI Tools and Chatbots in Health Sciences

Guidance for Clinical, Research, and Educational Use at Yale

Generative AI is creating powerful new ways to improve clinical care, speed up research, and support learning. At the same time, it’s important to handle sensitive health information carefully, whether it comes from patients or research participants.

This guidance explains how to use AI and AI chat tools safely, in accordance with University privacy and security rules. It applies specifically to the Yale School of Medicine (YSM), Yale School of Public Health (YSPH), Yale School of Nursing (YSN), and Yale Health. The guidance focuses on situations that involve HIPAA-protected health information (PHI) and clarifies the difference between clinical decision support tools and other platforms, such as Clarity, the University-supported AI platform.
